Advantages of anaerobic reactors
Based on this principle, in the late 1960s, a high-rate anaerobic reactor based on the principle of microbial fixation—the anaerobic filter—was born. Its success lies in the addition of solid packing materials (such as gravel) to the reactor, where microorganisms grow on the surface of the packing materials, avoiding water washing. This cleverly separates the average water retention time from the biological solid retention time. The solid retention time can reach hundreds of days, shortening the anaerobic treatment of high-concentration wastewater from days or tens of days in the past to a few hours or days.

Advantages and disadvantages of anaerobic reactors
The upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor is a typical second-generation anaerobic wastewater treatment reactor. UASB reactors have a high organic load and have been widely used in the past 10 years, accounting for about 70% of the total number of anaerobic reactors in the world.

Promotion and application of anaerobic reactor technology
Anaerobic biological treatment, also known as anaerobic digestion and anaerobic fermentation, refers to the process by which anaerobic or facultative microorganisms decompose and produce methane and carbon dioxide under anaerobic conditions. Early anaerobic treatment processes were only used for domestic wastewater treatment, then for sludge digestion and decomposition, and then for industrial wastewater treatment, and many effective anaerobic biological treatment processes have been developed. Traditional anaerobic biological treatment technologies have disadvantages such as long water retention time, low organic load, and large tank capacity, which have limited the promotion and application of anaerobic biological treatment technologies.

What is an ABR anaerobic tower?
Anaerobic towers are the core treatment units for the treatment of medium-to-high concentration organic wastewater. ABR anaerobic towers, or anaerobic baffle reactors, are a new type of third-generation anaerobic tower developed based on the second-generation UASB anaerobic tower.
